Whats that thingy that comes out on the 300sl gullwing door when closed?

after watching the Superbowl commercial I noticed that the doors on the 300sl have this thingy that comes out when you close the door. after re watching top gear I noticed that the handle on the new guillwing closed in when you shut the door kinda like the old one which is kinda cool
